Chen Cheng (born January 4, 1897) was a general of the Kuomintang. He was first successful in forcing the Chinese Red Army to launch their Long March (still, his troop had heavy casualties). In the war with Japan, Chen was one of the top military assistants of Chiang Kai-Shek. Chen's plan was to seek a decisive action in the south instead of fightinh in the North, as the Kuomintang troops were in a poor condition and didn't have enough transporting vehicles. Later Chen commanded Chinese troops during various battles, like the Battle of Wuhan or the Battle of Changsha. In 1943, he was appointed the commander of the Chinese Expeditionary Force in Burma theatre until he was replaced by Wei Li-huang due to illness. Chen was appointed as the Governor of Taiwan in 1949 to make it one of the strongholds of the Kuomintang. After loosing the Civil War, he remained in high civil positions like Vice-Executive of the Kuomintang, Vice President and Premier of the Republic of China. He died on March 5, 1965 of hepatic tumors. ---------------------- Evillittlekenny
