Eino Laisi (1908,Säkkijärvi - 1986,Salo) Knight of the Mannerheim Cross No.115. During the Winter War he served as rifleman in coastal artillery and fought in the Battle of Vyborg Bay (March 2 - 13, 1940). In Continuation War he served as anti-tank gunner in 4th Division at Karelian Isthmus and East Karelia. He was promoted to Korpraali (Lance Corporal) in May 1942 and 2 months later he was temporarily laid off from duty among the older age class, who were later called back to duty in June 1944. He was then put to service of coastal artillery where he became leader of machine gun team and took part in the Battle of Vyborg Bay (June 30 - July 10, 1944). He received the Mannerheim Cross (2nd class) on June 4, 1943, particularly for his actions in village of Yläsäiniö, south of Vyborg, in 1941. During strong enemy attempt to escape encirclement supported by artillery and tanks on August 29, Private Laisi destroyed seven tanks and even after he was wounded to his arm and surrounded by enemies alone with his gun, he destroyed first five trucks of a grand column, blocking a road and decisevely effecting creation of motti (pocket) in the area. After returning from hospital he was credited for taking out several bunkers. For the wound he received 2nd class Medal of Liberty, which was commonly awarded to soldiers wounded in action.
