German Forces
Foreign SS-volunteers during the fighting at Narva, Estonia 1944. The German and foreign SS-survivors described the Soviet artillery shelling as "trommelfeuer", literally drum-fire. The massive Soviet bombardment were so intense that a Norwegian survivor described it as the beating of a tin drum. The shelling reduced trenches and human bodies to nothing. It was a scene from Hell. Intestines and brain mass mixed with dirt from the trenches.
