This painting, named "Sintetic Duce", is a good example of the works of art of the Futurism (or Modernism as it's known abroad), in the late 30's.
The author, Italo Fasullo, like other predecessors of this artistic movement in WWI (for example Boccioni, Sant'Elia...), when it was his time enlisted as a volounteer and fell on the field. DVX

In 1933 O'Duffy was the founder of the Fine Gael Party which developed from the Blueshirts, and was thus leader of the political opposition to de Valera's Fianna Fail party. A year later he was ousted from the leadership when he proposed an invasion of Northern Ireland. Fine Gael saw itself strongly in the mainstream of European pro Axis movements and that can clearly be seen in the words of John A. Costello who later became leader of Fine Gael and Prime Minister of the Irish Republic. Speaking in the Dail he said "The Blackshirts have been victorious in Italy and Hitler's Brownshirts have been victorious in Germany, as assuredly the Blueshirts will be victorious in Ireland." During the Spanish Civil War, O'Duffy led the 700 strong pro-Franco Irish brigade.

This image well represents the blending of new artistic themes and the public representation of power. Note the "sphinxes" at left and right: they seem to come from a science fiction film of the time. And if you notice, they have a style well-attuned to the "synthetic Duce" of Fasullo I' ve already posted. The balcony too, is a contemporary representation of contemporary ancient political-heroic themes (with the Duce on horseback), with clear references to the art of the Roman emperors, but under a modern new "futuristic" look.
