Adj sef av Nicolae Burileanu poses alongside his Bf 109E shortly after his arrival on the Stalingrad front on 7 September 1942. His tunic is decorated with the Romanian pilot's wings, a German Frontflugspange, the ribbon of the Iron Cross, Second Class, and an impressive array of miniature decorations. Burileanu was one of the ”old hands” of Grupul 7 Vânătoare, and by the end of the war the 36-year-old pilot had scored at least ten victories. He subsequently became one of the few ”vânători” (fighter pilot) to succeed in post-war aviation, retiring after 32 years' service, and having flown a total of 50 types of aircraft.

War episode:
From the over 200 successful missions that lt. av. Gheorghe Georgescu executed, the one on 13 January 1945 stands out. The remaining four operational Romanian Ju-88A-4s took off to bomb one of the bridges over the Danube in Budapest. He was the commander of the mission, being the most experienced officer taking part (even though not the highest ranking). On the way to the city one of the bombers had some technical problems and had to turn back. They were flying at 5000 m. The powerful German and Hungarian AAA started firing. Lt. av. Georgescu gave the signal to prepare for the dive. The bomb bay opened, the bombs were armed. Then he gave the second signal and the formation entered the dive. They did not use the dive breaks, confusing the enemy AA gunners, who were always firing behind them. At 1500 m the bombs were released and the pilots pulled the sticks as hard as they could. The formation turned to the left to observe the effect of their bombing. At least two 250 kg bombs had hit the "Chain Bridge", destroying a portion of it. The Ju-88s escaped to the southeast and came back to the base.

Romanian Ju 88A-4

Slt rez av Ioan Dicesare of Grupul 7 Vânătoare shows engineer Lt mecanic Șerban Diaconu the damage to his Messerschmitt ('White 38' Wk-Nr.13842) after a dogfight with Soviet fighters which were obviously armed with both machine guns and cannon. 'White 38' later suffered 30 per cent damage from Soviet flak while flown by Adj av Constantin Urcache on 21 July 1943, the fighter in turn being handed back to the Germans for repairs to be effected.

War episode:

On 22 April 1943, slt. av. Ioan Dicezare engaged a Soviet bomber formation and shot down one A-20 Boston, which fell behind the Axis lines. He then returned to the airfield and took the group's liaison airplane: a Bf-108 Taifun. He landed near the crash site and found only two survivors: the pilot and the observer. He took them prisoners using his 9 mm Beretta pistol. The Soviet crew later gave valuable information about the VVS airfields in the area.
