Young Chuikov.

Soviet Forces

Young Chuikov.

Vasily Ivanovich Chuikov as a young officer, age 30. Later, as Lt. General, he commanded the key Soviet 62nd Army in the defence of Stalingrad; later again, as commander of the same Army (by then redesignated 8th Guards Army of the 1st Belorussian Front) accepted the surrender of German forces defending Berlin from General Helmuth Weidling. Chuikov continued in Red Army service after the war, retiring from the Army in 1972. He was promoted Marshal of the Soviet Union in 1955, and elevated to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1961. Died 1982 (aged 82) and is buried at the Stalingrad Memorial on Mamayev Kurgan, Volgograd, Russia. Quite a general. Best regards, JR.
