DUKW (1)

US Marines.

Heavily-loaded DUKW (2.5 ton amphibious truck) hits the beach, Phillipines, possibly under fire, Phillipines, 1944. These vehicles were highly versatile land/water transports, widely used by the US, British and British Dominion forces in amphibious landings and related operations in all theatres. Among their uses were sea to shore transport of stores and equipment and shore to sea transport of wounded. A DUKW could also carry up to 12 troops in lieu of cargo. One disadvantage was that, since they were unarmoured, there was the possibility of getting very badly shot up close to or on the beach. Best regards, JR.
