Lew Ayres made news in 1942 when he was sent to a conscientious objectors camp.  Later he served honorably in the Army Medical Corps in the Philippines.

Known to audiences merely as Sabu, the Indian-born star of Elephant Boy and other pictures was inducted into the army in 1943.  Soon afterward he became a U.S. citizen; later he was sent to the South Pacific.
